With the first hot weekend in 2018 now under our belt, plans for the upcoming bank holidays and summer days are surely the order of the day to keep the spirits high?

For us, that means the exciting prospect of getting outside – and enjoying a different cinematic experience by going to one of the many outdoor cinemas available in the UK. And it seems it’s not just us that loves going outdoors for our cinema fix; George Wood, founder of Britain’s biggest outdoor film company, the Luna Cinema, speaking to The Guardian says ticket sales have tripled in the past three years. So with the trend for outdoor cinema becoming increasingly popular, what different locations and settings can people enjoy?

For those lucky enough to live in or near London, these can range from classic movie revivals enjoyed in a hot tub with friends through to singalongs in castle grounds or picnics in the grounds of Somerset House to watch the latest Film4 offering. Not to fear though – the trend for outdoor cinema is also growing outside of the capital should you wish to try a movie screening under the stars.

Below are a couple of options we recommend for your Outdoor Cinema visit. And even if the fickle British weather tries to scupper your plans, we promise it will still be worth going for the experience alone.

  1. The Mockingbird Cinema & Kitchen, Birmingham – http://www.mockingbirdcinema.com/
  2. The Rooftop Cinema Club, London – https://rooftopfilmclub.com/london/
  3. LunaFlix Outdoor Cinema, Northamptonshire (multiple venues) – http://www.lunaflix.co.uk/

For those wanting to try Outdoor Cinema for the first time, we also recommend seeing what’s on at your local National Trust properties. With the longer days and warmer temperatures, it’s a great opportunity to take the whole family including the smaller, younger members of the family out to the cinema whilst still being able to enjoy the countryside and our heritage. It might be the perfect chance to introduce your kids to 80’s classics like Back to The Future, The Goonies and Grease, all regularly re-played for outdoor audiences. Who could want for anything more?

So go book your tickets for your next outdoor cinema experience, pack a picnic and you may even want to try a screening with a fancy dress, dress code!

Don’t forget to check back regularly to see what’s on and coming soon to these special outdoor cinemas.
